Big companies' 10-year challenge. Infographic

10 year challenge was a pretty strange start of the 2019. People were and still are posting photos of themselves from now and 10 years ago side by side to show how aging changed them. Indeed a decade is quite a long time and a lot could change drastically.

It is also true for big companies. Most of them due to globalization grew a lot during the last 10 years. Some more than others. Let's see how the biggest companies have changed in numbers over the last 10 years.

Google

Google is unquestioningly a huge part of everyday life of majority of people. So it is not surprising that the number of daily searches grew 2,75 times – from 2 billion to 5,5 billion in 10 years. Now Google owns 93% of search engine market share in comparison to 90% decade ago. It can seem like a small increase, but it allows Google to strengthen its position as a search engine leader.

Youtube

After Google bought Youtube in 2006 for $1,65 billion the platform was growing exponentially. 10 years ago Youtube contained 70 million videos. Now there are around 7 billion videos that will take almost 200 thousand years to watch altogether. Although Youtube management does not have a good opinion among users and creators (“Youtube Rewind 2018” is the most disliked video on platform with almost 16 million dislikes) Youtube is still very popular and being a youtuber is a desirable profession among kids and youth.

Facebook

2009 was the year when Facebook became mainstream. At that point platform already surpassed Myspace and reached 200 million active users, which number increased rapidly in the last 10 years. Now Facebook has 2,32 billion users, third of Earth population, that make the platform the most popular social media worldwide.

The beloved users’ feature – the “like” button – was introduced in February of 2009. Nowadays users are clicking it 3,1 billion times every minute. Facebook also is still a great platform for people to post pictures despite the popularity of Instagram. In fact users are adding 9 billion photos monthly to Facebook in comparison to 3 billion pictures and video posted on Instagram.

Apple

Since the release of the first iPhone in 2007 Apple was launching a new smartphone every year. In September 2018 company introduced their latest 10th iPhone XS, XS Max and XR. Also rumor has it that this year new iPhone 11 will hit the market. It supposed to have a triple camera and to not be 5G-compatible still. And although Apple always faces the criticism about theirs’ products company’s revenue is growing rapidly. Every minute 395 iPhones, 80 iPads, 31 Macs, 23 Apple watches and 20 iPad pros are sold worldwide brining $390 thousand in revenue. It all helped Apple to become the first company to be worth $1 trillion.

McDonald’s

Although the growth of McDonald’s during the last decade seems to be very small, it still is a huge difference considering that people are becoming more and more conscious about what they are putting in their bodies. The number of customers served daily increased by 11 million – from 58 to 69 million. On the other hand McDonald’s opened only 5 thousand joints in a decade. Now there are 37 thousand restaurants worldwide serving 4,5 thousand burgers, 2,8 thousand kilograms of fries and 2 thousand cups of coffee every minute.

During the last couple years McDonald’s revenue was on the decline. After it peaked in 2013 - $28,106 billion – company’s earnings were decreasing year after year. Although in a span of a decade the number of restaurants and customers increased the income in 2018 is lower than in 2009 ($21,025 billion and $22,745 billion respectively).

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is one of the first places where people turn to looking for information on different topics. Although the facts there considered biased because the editors are predominantly male (only 9% of editors are female) the number of active users almost doubled in a decade – from 75 to 139,3 thousand.

Now Wikipedia contains 49 million articles in every languages, of which 5,8 million articles are in English cumulating 15,9 billion monthly views.  This makes Wikipedia fifth most popular website.

Brands mentioned above are well known worldwide. Some of them were already leading their field decade ago. For others 2009 was a start of a rapid growth. But surely we encounter most of them if not all in our everyday life.
